Links added to a site simply because someone finds something relevant are called natural links. Bloggers especially add value to natural linking because of their large reader bases.

For big brands their influence throughout forums also spreads quickly. Forums work the much the same way as social media. The more people who share links and content about a specific brand, the more traffic that brand will get.

Social media is another big link builder for large companies. When they utilize social media properly they can create platforms with millions of fans and followers. From these platforms companies create loyal customers. These customers help drive massive amounts of traffic to the site. Not only will customers visit the sites of large companies, they also share their favorites with their friends. This creates a snowball effect. Each time a company’s platform is shared with another person it has the potential to reach hundreds more. As links to a site spread like wildfire through social media platform, they boost social signals and grab search a search engine’s attention.

Don’t be discouraged by the rankings of big companies. When you provide valuable content, search engines can’t ignore it. What are Meta Tags?

Before search engine algorithms were as advanced as they are today, Meta tags were used as a kind of hidden language developed so that search engines could determine what a particular site was about. Unfortunately, there was nothing to stop unscrupulous webmasters from stuffing their sites with irrelevant or misleading Meta tags – such as using the search word “Disney” to lead to an adult site.

Because of this, many experts will tell you that Meta tags have little to no impact on your search ranking – that does not mean however that they are completely useless.

Often in a discussion about Meta tags, you will also hear the term “title tag”. The title tag is not technically not a Meta tag however, as it is a required component of your coding – Meta tags are optional.

Perhaps the most useful Meta tag is the Meta descriptions tag.  A well-written description not only tells users what is on your page, but it is like a kind of advertisement – something that persuades a user to visit your site. A description is what shows up in the search engine results. It is like good curb appeal. If a description is left empty, the search engine will fill it in for you. In some cases, this may actually be desirable – but if you’d rather describe your business yourself instead of letting Google or Bing do it, then a well written Meta description is the key. The one drawback however, is that even you write a great Meta description tag, there is no guarantee that the search engine is going to use it.

Optimization Guidelines

Since title tags are so important, you should follow some the following guidelines in order to optimize their effectiveness.

  • Use Title Case when typing your titles.
  • Titles should clearly indicate what information can be found on the page – this is important for both search engines and visitors to the site.
  • Every page must have a unique title (you cannot simply use the same title for every page on your website).
  • Home page titles should introduce both the page itself and the purpose of the website. In other words, you need to include the name of your organization in the title tag of your home page.
  • Be aware of title tag limits (maximum length). Google will display up to 66 characters, cropping to complete words and Yahoo has an absolute cut off of exactly 120 characters. Make sure that your title works for both Google and Yahoo.
  • Include target keywords in your title tags – remember you title tag is your single most important piece of information for search engines.
  • There are a number of tricks that you can use to make you title tag more eye-catching for users. Webmasters like to use all sorts of symbols like asterisks, brackets, arrows and more to make their titles stand out.
  • Google, Bing, and Yahoo! will display the copyright symbol (©), the trademark symbol (™), and the registered trademark symbol (®) in titles. You can use © or ™ to put the Copyright symbol in your title, ™ or ™ to put the Trademark symbol in your title, and ® and all will appear correctly all the search engines.
