In order for your website to get the attention that you want, it’s Imperative that you follow some best practices of search engine optimization (SEO). But if onsite SEO is your only focus, you are missing out on a big piece of the puzzle. Having quality backlinks to your site is a huge part of SEO – the challenge for many business owners however, is how to create content that these authority sites will actually want to link to.

Here are five tips for getting the backlinks you need to increase your search engine ranking and drive more traffic to your website.

Tip #1: List it and love it

It is no secret that people love list blogs. Reading about the 10 top foods that you should eat for flatter abs, or the 15 secrets of becoming a millionaire will always be appealing to people. A study by Fractl and Buzzstream found that list posts are the ones that are most commonly shared on social media.

Tip #2: Guide the way

Writing a guide, whether it’s about how to start your own e-commerce business or how to build a gazebo in your back yard, will take quite a bit more time and effort than writing a list post, but they results can be well worth it.

Having a “definitive” or “ultimate” guide to anything is a great tool to have on hand when a discussion about the topic breaks out on social media – it allows you to post the link and say “you’re welcome”. If the guide is helpful and well written, others will share it and create backlinks for you.

Tip #3: Use infographics

While it’s true that infographics have declined a bit in popularity, there are still the most viral form of content you can share. The trick is to make sure that the infographics are high quality and on a topic that people care about.

Tip #4: Influence the Influencer

What if you could get someone like a Richard Branson, or a Barak Obama or any influencer in your industry to “like” or comment on something you’ve posted? Would that get people’s attention and make them curious enough to visit your site?

But how can you get an influencer’s attention? One way is to make them look amazing. If they provide a product, or advice via a blog – then follow it and post on their site – or send an email about how their product or advice transformed your life/business/health – whatever! Just be sure to be truthful and genuine. There is a good chance that the influencer will ask for more details.

At this point, offer to write a blog or case study for them, further outlining the results you got – or you could go ahead and write the blog and include the link in your first email. Done right, this strategy will often result in backlinks.

Tip #5: Engage your community

Whether you want to define community as a geographic region, a group of professionals in the same industry, or a bunch of hobbyists who share a passion, it is important to demonstrate that you are in tune with that community and create content accordingly.

A few ways to do this include, offering solutions to a complex problem or finding fascinating information that isn’t commonly found on all the “regular” sites in that community. Yes, this will take an investment of time and resources, but it can pay you back in plenty of backlinks.

As the internet becomes more saturated with websites that are competing for backlinks, the level of effort needed to get them will only increase. Fortunately, there are some proven tactics to help get you off to a good start.
