What Are SEO Techniques For Honest Link Building?

Which Methods Should You Avoid?

SEO Techniques – Link Building

When it comes to SEO techniques, link building is one of the first things that comes to mind. Link building is important, but if it’s not done correctly, it can do more harm than good. In some ways it can be compared to steroids. They give you an advantage at first, but in the long run, they are harmful. If you are not extremely careful, you will get caught and your site will be penalized if not outright banned.

You can’t use the excuse of “everybody else is doing it”. First of all, even if others are link building, many are very cautious with it. Those who are trying to take shortcuts with link building will eventually have to pay for doing so. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next month, but they will eventually. You can expect the same if you try to use any underhanded methods. Just like steroids – you can’t get away with cheating forever.

What is considered “bad link building”?

“Bad” link building can involve any link building that is not acquired naturally. It is essentially any link that is obtained through black hat SEO tactics. In the old days, you could simply submit your webpage or blog post to thousands of directories with a site submitter program. You could also submit the URL to link farm sites. Those days are over – not that the strategies were very helpful to begin with, since they wouldn’t guarantee any traffic, let alone targeted traffic. Today, if you tried such a strategy, Google Penguin will catch you and penalize or ban your site as a result.

Other Bad Link Building SEO Techniques

  • Contributing to blogs is okay just as long as it’s a legitimate blog and your post adds value. However, you will want to avoid blog networks, as Google hates them. There are fake blogs out there that people pay to contribute to just so they can get a link back to their own site. Just about any blog with poorly written, low-quality content and tons of spammy external links should be avoided.
  • Press release syndication involving low-quality content is also frowned upon by the search engines. The only press release syndication services that Google considers to be legitimate are the ones that require high-quality content, fact checking, certain editorial guidelines, etc. You don’t want to just mass submit a press release to any syndicate platform that will accept it. The stricter they are, the more likely they are to be approved by the search engines.
  • Do not participate in link-baiting and switching. This means that you should not create a real piece of content for credible links, and then later replace the content with an advertisement or some other type of financially beneficial page. This technique basically means that you are tricking people into linking to that particular page.

The only viable SEO techniques for building links are honest ones. Come up with quality content, follow the rules, and hope that other people are willing to share. Do not try to trick them into it or manipulate the search engines. “Steroid” type of tactics might benefit you for a short period of time, but it will ultimately ruin not only your website, but your entire business.
